O-Week Diversity Facilitators

OMA is responsible for selecting and training Orientation Week (O-Week) Diversity Facilitators who serve a number of roles, not only during O-Week, but beyond.  The primary role of the Diversity Facilitators can best be summed be one of our six guiding principles for O-Week:  “Rice is an open community, a place where freedom of expression is uncompromisingly protected and where civility is powerfully affirmed.”  We embrace diversity and celebrate that fact that each new class hails from different backgrounds, environments, beliefs and traditions, and we value the educational experiences that come from living in a diverse community.  We must acknowledge, however, that the diverse community we prize at Rice may be a new experience for some.  As a result, the Diversity Facilitators help ensure that everyone feels welcome and valued as a new member of our community, and that our sense of civility towards each other is shared and respected.

The Diversity Facilitators continue promoting campus unity and respect for diversity throughout the year, in part, via the “Dialogues on Diversity” series.  These open, campus wide discussions are held each week and cover a wide variety of cultural and social issues.  Facilitators may also program in their college and are available to address campus concerns as the need arises.
